Responsible Development
Better Seguin supports responsible, balanced development that protects the character of our community while preparing for future growth.
Seguin needs a variety of housing options, including attainable and affordable housing. However, large concentrations of high-density housing and apartment projects should not become what defines our city. We want Seguin to remain a community where families choose to live because of its neighborhoods, quality single-family homes, open spaces, and strong sense of community.
New development should also help pay for the roads, utilities, drainage, public safety services, and other infrastructure it requires. Existing residents should not be left carrying the full financial burden created by rapid growth.
As Seguin grows, the city must also protect the quality of life residents expect. That includes parks and recreation, traffic mobility, emergency services, drainage, libraries, water and sewer capacity, fiscal stability, and coordination with local schools.
Better Seguin believes the city should establish clear, measurable standards for each of these areas and regularly report whether those standards are being met. Examples could include providing 600 gross square feet of library space per 1,000 residents, maintaining at least three acres of parkland with appropriate recreational facilities per 1,000 residents, and responding to Fire and EMS emergency calls within seven minutes at least 80% of the time.
Similar performance measures should be developed for all major quality-of-life indicators so residents can evaluate whether city services and infrastructure are keeping pace with growth. Growth should make Seguin stronger—not simply larger.
