Don’t Drag Queen Seguin
Citizens for a Better Seguin believes that public facilities should be used in ways that reflect the values, safety, and best interests of our community. We are deeply concerned about the planned PrideFest-style event at the Seguin Coliseum, especially if the event includes drag queen performances, children’s activities, or other entertainment involving direct interaction with minors.
Our position is simple: children should not be placed in environments where adult-themed performances, political activism, or controversial social messaging are presented under the banner of family entertainment. Parents have the primary responsibility to guide their children, but the City of Seguin also has a duty to ensure that events held in city-owned facilities are safe, properly supervised, and appropriate for the public.
We are not asking the city to ignore the law. We understand that public facilities may be subject to legal rules regarding access, speech, and equal treatment. However, the city is not powerless. The City of Seguin should require a complete security plan, appropriate staffing, clear event rules, responsible cost recovery, and strong child-safety safeguards before any controversial event involving minors is allowed to proceed in a public facility.
At a minimum, Citizens for a Better Seguin believes the city should require:
- Full disclosure of all performers and event participants who will interact with children
- Background checks and vetting for performers, volunteers, and organizers involved in children’s activities
- No unapproved performer substitutions
- Clear rules separating adult-themed entertainment from child-focused activities
- Adequate law enforcement and security inside and outside the facility
- Traffic, crowd-control, and protest-management planning
- Emergency medical and fire-safety planning
- A requirement that organizers pay appropriate security and facility-related costs allowed by city policy
- Full transparency with the public before the event takes place
Seguin families deserve straight answers. Who approved the event? What activities are planned for children? Will drag performers be present? Will performers and volunteers be vetted? Who is paying for security? How will the city protect attendees, protesters, children, families, and nearby residents?
Citizens for a Better Seguin believes city leaders should take these concerns seriously rather than dismissing them as “nothing to see here.” When an event creates public outcry, involves children, uses a city-owned facility, and may require law enforcement resources, the community deserves more than silence. We deserve transparency, accountability, and a clear safety plan.
Our message to the City of Seguin is clear: protect children, protect families, protect public safety, and protect the values of our community. Do not allow controversial adult-themed entertainment to be promoted to children in a taxpayer-supported public facility without strong safeguards, full transparency, and appropriate oversight.
